Le 5 janvier 2026, lors de la traditionnelle galette des Rois \u00e0 l’\u00c9lys\u00e9e, le pr\u00e9sident Emmanuel Macron a annonc\u00e9 une nouvelle qui r\u00e9jouit tous les amateurs de caf\u00e9s : il soutient la candidature des bistrots et caf\u00e9s fran\u00e7ais au patrimoine culturel immat\u00e9riel de l’UNESCO. \u00ab C’est le combat qu’on veut conduire \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9, pla\u00e7ant ces lieux de convivialit\u00e9 au m\u00eame rang que la baguette, d\u00e9j\u00e0 inscrite en 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette reconnaissance ne concerne pas les b\u00e2timents eux-m\u00eames, mais plut\u00f4t les pratiques sociales qui se d\u00e9roulent dans ces \u00e9tablissements. En septembre 2024, le minist\u00e8re de la Culture avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 inscrit \u00ab les pratiques sociales et culturelles associ\u00e9es aux caf\u00e9s et bistrots \u00bb \u00e0 l’inventaire national du patrimoine culturel immat\u00e9riel. Mais qu’est-ce qui rend les bistrots si sp\u00e9ciaux pour la culture fran\u00e7aise ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D’abord, ces lieux incarnent la convivialit\u00e9 \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise. Dans un bistrot, on ne vient pas seulement boire un caf\u00e9 ou prendre un verre. On y retrouve ses amis, on y discute de tout et de rien, on y partage des moments qui renforcent le lien social. \u00c0 Strasbourg, par exemple, deux amis se retrouvent chaque jour depuis 20 ans au m\u00eame caf\u00e9. Cette r\u00e9gularit\u00e9 cr\u00e9e des rituels quotidiens qui structurent la vie locale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensuite, les bistrots favorisent la mixit\u00e9 sociale. Au comptoir, ouvriers, intellectuels, artistes et hommes d’affaires se c\u00f4toient naturellement. Ces espaces d\u00e9mocratiques permettent des \u00e9changes entre toutes les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations et tous les milieux sociaux. Par ailleurs, beaucoup de bistrots accueillent des expositions, des conf\u00e9rences ou des d\u00e9bats, jouant ainsi un r\u00f4le culturel important dans leur quartier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette candidature arrive apr\u00e8s sept ans de mobilisation de l’association \u00ab Bistrots et Caf\u00e9s de France \u00bb. D\u00e9sormais, avec le soutien pr\u00e9sidentiel, l’objectif est clair : obtenir la reconnaissance de l’UNESCO. Cependant, la France ne peut proposer qu’une candidature tous les deux ans, ce qui montre l’importance accord\u00e9e \u00e0 cette tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il faut reconna\u00eetre que les bistrots font face \u00e0 des d\u00e9fis. Leur nombre est pass\u00e9 de plus de 200 000 dans les ann\u00e9es 1960 \u00e0 environ 36 000 aujourd’hui. N\u00e9anmoins, cette inscription au patrimoine t\u00e9moigne de la volont\u00e9 de pr\u00e9server cet art de vivre \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qu’ils soient inscrits ou non \u00e0 l’UNESCO, les bistrots restent des lieux vivants o\u00f9 se perp\u00e9tue quotidiennement une certaine id\u00e9e de la vie en France. Peut-\u00eatre que la meilleure fa\u00e7on de comprendre cette candidature, c’est d’aller prendre un caf\u00e9 au comptoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
